Navigating to a Tesla Supercharger
By navigating to any destination in your Tesla, the route planner automatically adds Supercharge stops to your route. In the image below, I entered the destination Rome, and the route planner shows the route from Belgium to Rome, including all Supercharge stops.
Once fully calculated, every Supercharge stop shows:
- The battery percentage upon arrival at the Supercharger
- charging time needed before resuming the trip
Anytime during your trip, you can view the list of upcoming Supercharge locations on your route and how long you'll be charging there. You can remove the proposed Supercharge locations at any time and add your preferred Supercharge location should you want to.
The navigation search box lets you easily search for interesting locations, such as Tesla Supercharger locations (or any other charge location) and shows you nearby facilities like hotels or places to eat. With this information, you can swap the suggested Supercharge locations for locations that better match your preferences.
As you approach the Supercharger, your Tesla vehicle preconditions the battery to optimise battery conditions to decrease the required charging time.
How to use a Tesla Supercharger
Supercharging is super easy. Follow these simple steps to charge your Tesla at a Tesla Supercharger.
-
Park your vehicle on an empty Supercharger spot.
-
Pull the charging connector from the dock.
-
Plug the connector into your vehicle, and the Tesla logo will turn green.
Your vehicle has started charging. Now go and enjoy your break.
That's all there is! There's no need for a badge, card or code because the Supercharger recognises your vehicle and the associated Tesla account. Since your payment details are stored in your Tesla account, you'll automatically be charged for the charging session. You're ready to stretch your legs, take a bathroom break or grab a drink.
When to stop Supercharging
Your Tesla App alerts you when your vehicle is sufficiently charged to continue your trip. At the end of the charging session, your Tesla App and Tesla vehicle also show the cost of your last charging session.
Note that during trips, Tesla rarely suggests charging your vehicle entirely. The algorithm behind these suggestions ensures sufficient range to reach your next charging stop or destination. The range estimation is accurate as it considers wind, temperature, etc. Range anxiety is not a thing at Tesla and only lives in your head based on fears of other people and stories you may have heard.
Usually, it takes +-15 minutes to recharge your battery for an equivalent of 275 kilometres, which is sufficient for another 2,2 hours of driving to the next supercharger at 120 km/hour. Of course, you're free to charge your battery even more, but note that your battery charges faster between 20% and 80%.
Tesla Superchargers with Tesla Lounges
Some Tesla Superchargers even have a Tesla Lounge. A Tesla Lounge is a place only Tesla drivers can access, allowing them to rest, grab a snack, or even play games.
